The basic basis for why Stu Ungar changed from gin to poker was that Stu was a bit too good at it. So skilled was he, that no player was able equal him. Even the so-called professionals who were meant to be the best at gin rummy were blow away when they faced Stu Ungar. One such gin rummy professionals was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Harry Stein was handed such a belittling beating at the hands of Stu Ungar that he evidently quit competing in it as a pro and never resurfaced at a gin tournament.

Accordingly, with a honor like that it wasn’t very long before gamblers became weary of competing against stu. He could not find any matches and in his agony he started doing something no one had done prior. Stu began offering beginning handicaps to likely opposing players with the high hopes that they might play opposed to him if they believed they had an edge. He deliberately played from a negative arrangement and one account has it that he even competed with a consistent bad egg. Amid the contest, he received a few words of wisdom that the absconder was at it yet again but Stu Ungar guaranteed that he was aware of the cheating and he would still come away with a win, which of course, he did.

The same trend followed Stu Ungar to vegas. He won so much that the poker rooms started requesting that he not to compete on their respective premises anymore. The reason for it was that other poker room clients would not be seated at the poker table if he were seated.

Stu Ungar is remembered more for his accomplishments in holdem poker but he always insisted that he was considerably more accomplished at gin rummy.

He defeated Doyle Brunson in the WSOP in Nineteen Eighty and became the youngest world champion. Because of his looks that made him appear far younger than he was, he was nicknamed, "The Kid".
