Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only one to achieve last game in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a large pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the best players in the world. While competing in online poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He frequently participates in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I know Gus is a great poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is penniless, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the min buy in.
Playing for the minimum takes a majority of the expertise out of big stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be 1 of the best poker players in the world but he can’t buy in for the full dollar value. I believe television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The greatest poker players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be found wagering on net poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in big stakes omaha/8 and texas hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his abilities in cash rounds?
