Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor on the planet by quite a few of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa showed him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to learn every little thing he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental feedback from other people annihilate his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he defeated many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
