Gus Hansen enjoyed a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only one to achieve closing table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the largest pots in high stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a large pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest enthusiasts around the world. While wagering on net poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. Gus often participates in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Hansen more often than not buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits for a good hand and then goes all in. I believe Hansen is a great poker player but not even close to the regular players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the game with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the minimum takes a majority of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I think television can skew our perception of the real world sometimes. The best poker players in the world could be players you have will not have heard of before. Gus can be found participating in web poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes omaha eight-or-better and texas hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his skills in cash games?
